PATNA; While congratulating the Chairman of Bar Council of India for hosting the two _ days international legal conference at Vigyan Bhawan today,,well known woman lawyer and vice_ president of Advocates” Association,Mrs Chhaya Mishra on Saturday suggested 35 per cent representation for women advocates in the central Bar Council and it’s branches in the different states
Mrs Chhaya Mishra said the law and justice ministry should take note of the growth in the number of women lawyers in High Courts and sub_ordinate courts. The then union law and justice minister,Kiren Rijjiu had informed the Parliament in July last year of the total number of advocates enrolled in the Bar,15 per cent were women
North eastern states courts have about 40 per cent women as lawyers,Mrs Chhaya Mishra said
In Bihar, there is only one women representative in the State Bar Council, but none at the national level.
Even in matters of selection of designated senior advocates, women have dismal representation. In Calcutta High Court, there are four,in Mumbai_ eight ,in Madras ten and in Bihar, only one woman designated as senior advocate
Mrs Chhaya Mishra said the entire selection process needed a relook to give fair representation to the women lawyers.
